I studied a BSc in Geophysical Sciences from 1991 to 1994 and Fred taught me and was my adviser. I remember his lectures were interspersed with entertaining stories from his research field trips which delighted us students. He clearly enjoyed the teaching and was a kind and thoughtful person who wanted the best for us, and was glad to hear what we had gone on to do after graduating. I am grateful to have known Fred and offer my condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and former students.

Ruth and Peter Liss
Fred was wonderful man and a great scientist. His discovery of sea-floor spreading revolutionised our understanding of how the Earth works. Fred was an inspiring colleague and leader of the School of Environmental Sciences at UEA. He is greatly missed.
