In the early "noughties", Mike and I were colleagues teaching Maths at Cardinal Newman College, Preston. His enthusiasm for the subject was infectious, not only to students but also to the Department staff. His blackboard work (chalk in those days) was painstakingly presented, as were his immaculate hand-written model solutions. We kept in touch and, for many years, tested each other with mathematical puzzles in regular email contests (which I never won!). We discovered our mutual interest in railways, for which Mike's knowledge was far superior to mine, and his photography skills are evident in the wall calendars and the enlarged print depicting stunning railway scenes, all of which arrived unexpectedly by post. I shall miss the correspondence of this generous, kind, family-loving friend.
